The film has achieved something that perhaps the best-written novel could never accomplish - it has made real the events of our past. Through testimonies of survivors, their descendants, and other witnesses to the period, Sukhdulan relives the atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.Through these testimonies, we are able to make connections between our present selves and our ancestors. By gaining a deeper understanding of their experiences through these documentaries, we are able to reflect on various aspects of our own lives. Some of us may not be survivors or victims of war but few people will deny that they have not lost someone important in their own lives or that they have not experienced tragedy or pain at some point in time. These connections and perspectives can help us to see and feel things in a completely different way. This is the power behind the Sukhdulan film. While we can never fully understand what it must have been like for those who experienced these atrocities, we can learn how they were able to overcome such seemingly insurmountable hardship by seeing how they lived after such terrible experiences.The Sukhdulan documentary gives us this connection.
